Maths : Time concept for Kids
  • A clock is used to tell time. It has an hour hand and a minute hand. Some clocks have a seconds hand.
  • There are 12 numbers from 1 to 12 on the face of the clock Between every two numbers the hour hand measures an hour and the minute hand measures 5 minutes.
  • The hour hand goes twice across the face of the clock in one day. There are 24 hours in a day. 
  • The minute hand goes one full circle across the face of the clock in one hour. There are 60 minutes in an hour.The minute hand goes one full circle across the face of the clock in one hour so it take 24 full circle in a day.
  • The seconds hand goes one full circle across the face of the clock in one minute.
Note: 1 hour = 60 minutes ; 1 minute = 60 seconds

AM and PM



The time before mid-day is denoted as a.m. and the time after mid-day as p.m. So, the time in the morning is denoted with a.m. and that in the evening with p.m.
For example :  8: 10 in the morning is written as 8: 10 A.M. and 6: 30 in the evening is written as 6: 30 P.M.

Reading exact time:   

The hour hand of the clock is little after 10.
The minute hand is 1 marks after 2 .
So, the minute hand is (5*2 + 1) = 11 marks after 12.
The second hand is 1 marks after 7
The seconds hand is at (7*5 + 1) = 36 marks after 12
 So, the exact time is 10 : 11 : 36
i.e., 10 hours 11 minutes 36 seconds.
Some conversions:
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days

Question 1 ) How many hours are there between 7 p.m. on a Sunday and 8 a.m. on Monday?
(A) 5 hours            (B) 13 hours
(C) 17 hours          (D) 15 hours

 Question 2) The first session of a cricket match began at 8: 30 a.m. It lasted for 3 hours and 15 minutes.When did the first session end?

 (A) 11: 45 p.m. (B) 10: 45 a.m.
 (C) 12: 45 p.m. (D) 11: 45 a.m. 

 Question 3) Aishi takes 7 minutes 15 seconds to travel to school while Aditya takes 1 minute 8 seconds less. How long does Aditya take to reach the school?
(A) 8 minutes 23 seconds
(B) 6 minutes 7 seconds
(C) 9 minutes 33 seconds
(D) 6 minutes 23 seconds


Question 4) How many minutes does the minute hand take to move from 2 to 9 ?

A) 35 
B) 30
C) 40
D) 45

Question 5 ) How many hours and minutes are there in 339 minutes?
(A) 6 h 29 min (B) 5 h 49 min 
(C) 4 h 39 min (D) 5 h 39 min

Question 6 ) How many minutes are remaining when 640 minutes are expressed in hours and minutes?
(A) 10 (B) 30
(C) 40 (D) 20

Question 7 )  Aishi arranged to meet Pari at the shopping mall at 6: 30 p.m. Pari was half an hour late. If Aishi reached the mall at 6: 20 p.m., how many minutes had she waited for Pari?
(A) 35 minutes  (B) 40 minutes
(C) 45 minutes  (D) 30 minutes


Question 8 )  On a Saturday, Aishi started doing his homework at 4: 15 p.m. and finished it at 5: 25 p.m. On Sunday, he took only half the time he took on Saturday to do the homework. How long did he take to finish his homework on Sunday?

 Question 9) Aishi has dance practice from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM on Tuesday , Wednesday and Thursday. How many hours of dance practise does Aishi have in a week ?

 Question 10) Aishi takes 6 minutes to draw a bird. If she start drawing 8 birds at 10: 30 AM at what time will she finish the drawing ?
